2006 PREVIEW

Sadly this once proud franchise may now be the worst team in the NFL. Brett Favre may regret coming back as he will have virtually no support this season, and he may have been better off resting on his laurels and riding off into the sunset.

Favre threw a career high 29 interceptions last year, and he could easily top that number this season. He lost two of his better targets in wide receivers Javon Walker and Antonio Chatman, meaning opposing defenses could now double team Donald Driver, leading to even more forced throws. As decimated as the receiving corps is, the running game is even a bigger question mark. Ahman Green is coming off of surgery to repair a torn quadriceps tendon, and he has not done a thing this off-season. Najeh Davenport had surgery to repair a broken ankle in October and has not taken any handoffs yet either. That leaves Samkon Gado as the go-to back for now, and he is coming off a torn MCL himself! Furthermore the Packers did not bolster their offensive line as much as they could have in the draft, curiously selecting tackle Daryn Colledge in the second round with the more highly regarded tackle Marcus McNeil still on the board.

The Packers did make a great move by selecting linebacker A.J. Hawk in the first round of the draft. Also third round pick linebacker Abdul Hodge may also see some immediate playing time. However, having to rely on these youngsters should give you an idea of just how much this defense has tailed off in recent years. Furthermore, cornerback Al Harris is in a contract dispute and has threatened not to report to camp until an agreement is reached.

2006 Prediction: 4 th Place NFC North
