2006 PREVIEW

It is hard to believe that the Eagles were in the Super Bowl just two short years ago. That should give you an idea of what a difference Terrell Owens made when he was on the field.

The receiving corps is very thin right now, as the likes of L.J. Smith and Jabar Gaffney does not strike fear into opposing secondaries. Philadelphia did not get much help in the draft either as fourth round pick Jason Avant of Michigan is another possession-type receiver that does not run all that well. Now we feel that Donavan McNabb is one of the better quarterbacks in the league, but it now appears he is wasting his talent here with no one to throw to. We would also feel a lot better about the running game if Brian Westbrook could stay in one piece. Westbrook is one of the more underrated backs in the league as he does everything well when healthy, but he seems to be forever injury prone.

The Eagle regressed to 21 st in the league defensively last year, and they were especially hurt by their inability to stop the run (117.7 rushing yards per game allowed). First round draft pick defensive tackle Brodrick Bunkey may help in that area, but he is still a work in progress. We do think the Eagles nailed a gem with defensive end Chris Gocing in the third round, but he is more of a pass rusher than a run stopper. All in all there is no veteran help to this unit to speak of, which we feel seals the Eagles’ fate to finish in the NFC East cellar again, two years after reaching the NFC summit.

2006 Prediction: 4 th Place NFC East
