SAN JOSE STATE SPARTANS O:7 D:2
The Spartans closed out their 2005 campaign with back-to-back wins to finish with a 3-8 overall mark. The strong ending marked the first time since 1997 that San Jose State finished a season with back-to-back wins. This paid off in recruiting for Head Coach Dick Tomey and his staff, and showed the locals that the program is improving. This year’s squad returns 9 total starters, seven of which come on the offensive side of the ball. The RB corps is led by 2 nd Team WAC member Yonus Davis, and he’ll look to better his 6.7 YPC average behind a veteran O-Line. Look for this unit to improve statistically in the second year of the new offense. The defense needs to be almost completely retooled, but does return a couple of key contributors. HC Tomey’s Desert Swarm defenses have proven to be vicious, so this unit could surprise in its second year of use. The special teams unit returns completely intact, and looks to be a major strength of the Spartans attack. San Jose get to play seven of its 12 games in the comfy confines of Spartan Stadium this year, and should definitely build on the three wins it achieved last season.
