NORTH TEXAS MEAN GREEN O:9 D:7
The Mean green found themselves in uncharted territory last season, finishing last in a league it had ruled since its inception in 2001. Now that the competition has exacted its revenge, the Mean Green will try to reassert itself as the kingpin of the Sun Belt Conference. With 16 returning starters and a boatload of talent that got playing time a year ago due to an enormous amount of injuries, North Texas is prime candidate to once again hoist the SBC crown above their heads come late November. Even though they lost five SBC games a year ago, it was by a combined 21 points. The Mean Green returns nine starters on offense, and gets back a healthy RB Jamario Thomas who was hampered by a leg injury throughout all of ’05. He’s got a nasty O-Line in front of him that took its lumps last season, and will no doubt want to return the favor this time around. Look for the Mean Green to once again be amongst the best rushing teams in the nation. To make matters worse for its opposition, NTX boasts one of the SBC’s best WR corps and solid QB play which makes them a double threat that all SBC defensive coordinator’s will have nightmares about stopping. Look for them to at least double last year’s scoring output (14 PPG). Defensively, the Mean Green are stout in the back seven, but need to find some playmakers up front to be a solid compliment to their fine offense. The schedule is brutal in terms of the SBC, but the Mean Green have the talent and chip on their shoulder to contend for the conference championship.
