If not for the Cajuns poor start to 2005 there’s no doubt they would have won the SBC Championship and played in the New Orleans Bowl against S. Mississippi. They were by far the hottest team in the conference to close out ’05, and should come into their 2006 campaign ready to make amends and destroy each and every one of their conference opponents en route to their first bowl game in over 3 decades. Head Coach Rickey Bustle’s offense was unstoppable at the end of last season, and he gets a bulk of those starters back in ’06. QB Jerry Babb is back for his senior campaign, and he’s got the program’s second 1000-yard rusher behind him (Tyrell Fenroy), and an O-Line that returns three of five protecting and opening up holes. The WR corps was pretty much an afterthought late last season due to the ground games success, but a pair of guys that caught half their passes a year ago returns. Overall, this will most likely be the SBC’s best offensive attack provided the key cogs stay healthy. Defensively, the Cajuns have question marks up front, but the back seven is the best HC Bustle has had during his tenure. He’s excited about this unit, and thinks it will surprise many when the seasons all but done. The Ragin’ Cajuns have a peach of a schedule to work with, and should no doubt be this year’s SBC representative in the NO Bowl.
