VANDERBILT COMMODORES O:6 D:6
The 2005 season was shaping up to be something special for Vandy through the first four weeks of play. Then a fluke loss to Middle Tennessee State saw the Commodores drop five of their last six to fall short of going bowling for the 23 rd straight season. Expectations are sure to be lower this season with their four year starter and first round draft choice Jay Cutler gone. The offense returns six from last year’s unit, and has more experience in every facet except at the QB position. The offense was the best it’s been in over 50 year’s last season, and a serious decline in productivity has to be expected in ’06. The defense was porous to say the least a year ago, and looks to be of the same caliber in ’06. Special teams is an area the ‘Dores should excel at with everyone returning.
HC Bobby Johnson is a solid coach, but the Commodores just don’t have the overall talent to compete in the rugged SEC. If the season consisted of classes in organic chemistry, advanced calculus and statistics, or quoting Shakespeare, Vandy would be the #1 ranked team in the league. However, this is pigskin were talking here and Vandy just doesn’t fit the bill to do much in ’06.
