TEXAS LONGHORNS O:6 D:7
Finally, HC Mack Brown and his staff finally got over the hump and won a number of big games last season en route to the National Championship. The dream season the Longhorns experienced last year was definitely a sight to see. They crushed a number of opponents outscoring them all by 33 PPG, and averaged a whopping 50 PPG offensively. The defense gave up a miniscule 16 PPG, and they boasted the best special teams unit in the country. This year’s squad returns 13 but loses 1 st TM All American QB Vince Young to the NFL. None of the returning QB’s has ever attempted a pass at the collegiate level, so a major drop-off in their scoring output has to be expected. However, the Horns return one of the best O-Line’s in the country and one of the deepest RB corps as well. Look for the ground attack to be the main focal point of the offense until the new field general gets comfortable with the offense. Defensively, the Horns are stacked once again. They only gave up a combined 303 YPG and had a stellar DEF YPP average of 18.4. They return seven from that unit and are loaded with a number of highly touted recruits in every facet of the defense. It’s scary to think, but the Horns could be even better defensively in ’06. Special Teams will have a new look to it this year with both kickers gone, but K Greg Johnson looks to pick right back up where he left off back in 2002 at Vandy when he was the #4 ranked punter in the country.
Texas has won at least nine games every year that Mack Brown has been their head coach dating back to 1998. It’s foolish to think they won’t be able to do it again this year with the loss of their stud QB, so don’t go laying your hard earned money on any futures ‘Under’ bets just yet. This team is loaded with talent, and has been for many years. They’re one of the top dogs in the Big 12, and in the country. Their schedule is nowhere near as rough as you’d expect for the crowning National Champion, but there’s no doubt they won’t be as ruthless as they were in ’05. A New Year’s Day Bowl is very likely, but a BCS Bowl is definitely within reach as long as they take care of business vs. Oklahoma and Ohio State. |
