The Big 12 was established in February 1994, when the former Big Eight Conference merged with four Texas schools that had been members of the Southwest Conference. Those Universities are Colorado, Iowa State, Kansas, Missouri, Kansas State, Nebraska, Baylor, Oklahoma, Texas, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M, and Texas Tech. There is a North and South division that allows for a Championship game at the end of the football regular season. Eight teams have played in BCS Bowls the last four seasons, and the Big 12 leads all conferences in appearances in the BCS National Championship game. Many bitter rivalries exist within the Big 12, but none more prevalent than the OU/Texas battle otherwise known as the Red River Shootout where the winner receives the Golden Hat. Big 12 Basketball teams are amongst the nation’s elite as well with 8 Final Four teams in the last four year’s. Big 12 Football teams have amassed a total of three National Championships, while Big 12 Basketball teams have amassed a total of 0 National Championships. Keep in mind that the conference is relatively young, and many of its members won National Championships within other Conferences.
