| It wasn’t the prettiest of resumes in ’05 for the Hawkeyes, but HC Kirk Ferentz and his staff coached Iowa to its fifth consecutive bowl invite. The teams’ stats did regress in ’05, but that can be attributed to the loss of some key personnel. Still, they suffered a number of close losses and look to be on the verge of something special in ’06. QB Drew Tate is back for his senior campaign, and he’ll be the ringleader of what looks to be one of the more potent offensive attacks in the entire country. The O-Line is loaded with experience and talent, and should improve upon last year’s numbers that saw them open up holes for an outstanding 4.8 YPC while surrendering only 19 QB sacks. They’re also loaded with speed in the backfield with the impressive combo of Albert Young (Big 10 #1 rusher) and Damian Sims. The defense was hampered early on last year by a very inexperienced D-Line. That won’t be the case in ’06 as the front wall comes in experienced and ranks amongst the countries elite. However, the LB corps takes a huge hit, but has talented vets looking to step right in. The secondary loses both of its corners, but returns six of eight and should improve upon last year’s numbers with a better D-Line up front wreaking havoc. Special Teams are outstanding once again led by K Kyle Schlicher who’s been nothing but money when his points mattered most.
Once again, the Hawkeyes are stacked and can no longer be considered a dark horse to ever win this conference anymore. HC Kirk Ferentz has built this program into a powerhouse, and the schedule is set up for them to have some major success in ’06. Look out for the black and gold!!!
