The ACC was established in June of 1953 when seven disgruntled Universities of the now defunct Southern Conference decided to establish its own league that would allow for post-season play. Those Universities were Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina, and Wake Forest. Virginia was admitted in December of 1953. The ACC and SEC swapped teams as South Carolina left and Georgia Tech entered in April of 1978. Then came Florida State in July of 1991, and Miami and Virginia Tech in July of 2004. Boston College’s entry in July of 2005 allowed the ACC to branch off into two divisions, the Coastal and Atlantic. College basketball enthusiasts absolutely love the ACC, and rightfully so. The ACC has captured 10 National Championships second only to the PAC 10, and 8 of the 12 members have advanced to the Final 4 at least once. It’s not known as a football conference, but the recent acquisitions in the last two-year’s will certainly bring a few more Titles to the ACC. That being said, current ACC members own a grand total of 10 National Championships. The amount of heated rivalries within this conference is phenomenal, but nothing beats a Duke/North Carolina basketball game, period.
