NHL Feature Presentation: Blues versus Predators

Saturday’s contest in Music City will be a battle for second place in the Central Division as the Predators host the St. Louis Blues. The Predators have won the first three of six meetings between the two teams this season. The last two matches were 2-1 shootout wins.

THE STORY: On Dec. 30 in St. Louis, Martin Erat scored the shootout winner and Pekka Rinne made 35 saves and five more in the shootout. As for the previous meeting on Dec. 17, David Legwand netted the game winner and Rinne made 39 saves. Legwand has two goals and two assists in the three games against the Blues. T.J. Oshie leads St. Louis with two goals and an assist, while captain David Backes has collected three assists.

ABOUT THE BLUES (30-13-7): St. Louis currently holds the second spot in the Central and fourth in the conference with 67 points. The Blues are chasing the Detroit Red Wings, who have 71 points. The Blues jumped into their current position with a 1-0 win over the visiting Los Angeles Kings on Friday. It was their first game after the All-Star break. Veteran Jamie Langenbrunner scored his fourth goal of the season and Jaroslav Halak made 22 saves for his fourth shutout in seven games and 21st career. The Blues as a team have a team-best 10 shutouts this season. Halak is 12-1-3 in his last 16 starts.

ABOUT THE PREDATORS (31-17-4): Nashville, which is 8-2-0 in its last 10 games, is coming off a 4-1 road loss to the Philadelphia Flyers. It was just the second loss for the Predators in their last 11 outings. Defenseman Ryan Suter scored the lone goal while backup goalie Anders Lindback made 24 saves. Nashville is coming of an impressive 11-2 month of January. The Predators, who are 16-7-3 on home ice, have won 12 of their last 14 at Bridgestone Arena.

OVERTIME:

1. Nashville is 11-2-2 against Central Division opponents this season.

2. The NHL’s Third Star for January, Rinne has won 10 straight games and 13 of his last 14.

PREDICTION: Blues 3, Predators 2.
