The quickly developing UFC on FOX 3 card received another new matchup on Thursday, when promotion officials announced that middleweights Karlos Vemola and Mike Massenzio will square off at the May 5 event.
Vemola (8-2) originally entered the UFC as a heavyweight, where he suffered his first career blemish in a 2010 decision loss to Jon Madsen. Following the defeat, the Czech fighter dropped to 205 pounds and claimed a win over Seth Petruzelli to close out the year.
However, after being sidelined by a serious mouth infection, Vemola returned to the Octagon in his sole 2011 appearance to lose a decision to debuting fighter Ronny Markes at UFC Live 5.
Meanwhile, Massenzio (13-6) has gone just 2-4 in his UFC career. The 29-year-old fighter was released from the promotion in 2010 following losses to C.B. Dollaway and Brian Stann, but returned to face light heavyweight Krzysztof Soszynski on short notice in June—ultimately losing via unanimous decision.
After falling to Soszynski, Massenzio rebounded with a hard-fought win over former WEC champion Steve Cantwell at UFC 136. Most recently, the New Jersey native was submitted by jiu-jitsu ace Rousimar Palharas at UFC 142 in January.
The UFC’s third appearance on network television, taking place at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, N.J., will be headlined by a five-round lightweight showdown between Jim Miller and Nate Diaz. The event will also feature a flyweight matchup between Darren Uyenoyama and John Dodson, as well as a heavyweight bout pitting Pat Barry against Lavar Johnson.
