Boston Red Sox third baseman Kevin Youkilis contributed to the growing concern regarding a team that has seen its wild-card lead shrink to 5 ½ games over the Tampa Bay Rays when he was sent back to Boston on Friday for an MRI exam on his left hip.
Despite recently returning from the disabled list with a sore back, Youkilis experienced a hip flare-up in Thursday’s game at Toronto. The doctors diagnosed Youkilis with hip bursitis and administered an injection intended to relieve the discomfort, according to the Boston Herald. To make matters worse, Youkilis is also suffering from a hernia.
Boston manager Terry Francona stated before Saturday’s game that Youkilis would miss the final two games in the Red Sox’s series against the Rays. It’s not unlikely that he will not return until Tuesday when the team opens its series against the Blue Jays.
Youkilis is hitting .261 with 17 homers, 80 RBIs, and a .375 on-base percentage in the 117 games he’s appeared in this season.
