San Diego Padres closer Heath Bell’s status remains the same as it was prior to the July 31 nonwaiver trading deadline, he’s staying put.
The San Francisco Giants filed a waiver claim for Bell earlier this week but were unable to reach an agreement before Friday’s deadline, according to SI.com.
The Giants, who are missing closer Brian Wilson due to a sore elbow, had hoped to strengthen the back end of their bullpen with the acquisition of Bell. The San Francisco Chronicle reported that Wilson was throwing a few balls on Thursday, though he will not be ready to come off the disabled list on Wednesday.
Bell will be a free agent after this season, and is 3-4 with a 2.55 ERA and 35 saves this season.
