Serena Williams, who hasn’t played on the WTA Tour since winning Wimbledon last year due to two foot surgeries, is recuperating at home after being hospitalized Monday for a blood clot in her lungs, which her doctor called a pulmonary embolism. It was discovered after she returned from New York for doctor’s appointments relating to her foot issues.
The 29-year-old athlete received emergency medical treatment at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles just a day after she attended the Academy Awards.
“Serena did indeed suffer from a pulmonary embolism last week, and the hematoma was another unexpected scare,” spokeswoman Nicole Chabot said in a statement on Wednesday. “Thankfully everything was caught in time. With continued doctor visits to monitor her situation, she is recuperating at home under strict medical supervision.”
Earlier in the week, Serena said she had been targeting the French Open as her return to tennis. She hasn’t played since last year’s Wimbledon because of a foot injury suffered when she stepped on broken glass. Williams has dropped to No. 11 in the world. She injured her right foot on July 7, 2010, in a freak accident at a restaurant in Germany.
Her walking boot was taken off a few weeks ago and Williams hopes to begin training soon for Roland Garros, the year’s second major that begins in Paris in May. If Serena doesn’t play beforehand, she likely will be ranked down near 20 in the world and thus would have to be seeded there, giving her a much tougher road.
