The winner of Saturday’s UFC 118 co-headliner between Gray Maynard (9-0 MMA, 7-0 UFC) and Kenny Florian (13-4 MMA, 11-3 UFC) will earn number one contendership for the lightweight title.
UFC President Dana White confirmed the plans at the pre-UFC 118 press conference.
The fight will air Saturday at Boston’s TD Garden as part of the night’s pay-per-view broadcast.
White, who previously hinted that Maynard could get a title shot if victorious at January’s UFC Fight Night 20 event. Maynard earned a split decision victory over Nate Diaz, but Frankie Edgar was awarded the title shot instead.
“If Gray Maynard beats Kenny Florian, he deserves it, no doubt,” White said.
White said the same goes for Florian.
Maynard, who is a former Michigan State wrestler, is undefeated in is professional MMA career, including a win over now-champ Edgar. Although he has defeated other notable fighters, his past six wins have all came by way of decision.
Florian is entering UFC 118 with eight wins out of his past nine fights, with seven ending via stoppage.
